Developmental Reading Disabilities

Dr. Goldsworthy's books are available from Thomson Delmar Learning

Developmental Reading Disabilities: A Language Based Treatment Approach, Second Edition 2003

This book provides a rationale for including the speech-language specialist on the team responsible for assessing and remediating developmental reading disabilities. This rationale suggests that language acquisition is on a continuum, that there is a dynamic relationship between oral and written language, and that the acquisition of reading begins with the development of oral language.

In addition to helping students at risk for or demonstrating reading problems, phonological awareness training has been found to be useful in decreasing word-finding problems in students. This book contains 35 activities for deliberate manipulation of words, syllables, and phonemes to increase the student's ability to analyze the sounds of language.
