  CRJ Advising Center

All new Criminal Justice freshman and transfer students are assigned to an advisor to facilitate their transition into the program and to assist in planning their academic careers.

New students must come to the Criminal Justice Student Service Center to schedule an appointment to meet with their advisor during their first semester at CSUS.  The Center is also available for any student with questions about the major or wishing to be referred to a faculty advisor.

Hours of Operation:

Monday - Friday
8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

What's a Pre-Major?

A Pre-Criminal Justice Major is the designation given to incoming freshmen or transfer students.
Pre-Majors are not eligible to enroll in upper-division Criminal Justice classes.

How do I become a Major?

A Criminal Justice Pre-Major is eligible for Major status by completing:

  • CRJ 001 with a grade of "C" or better
  • CRJ 002 with a grade of "C" or better
  • CRJ 004 with a grade of "C" or better
  • CRJ 005 with a grade of "C" or better

All applicants are initially admitted to our program as "pre-majors".  In order to be reclassified to the Criminal Justice major, transfer students who have completed the equivalents of CRJ 001, CRJ 002, and CRJ 001 at a community college must attend our transfer orientation, to which they must bring unofficial transcripts for verification.

Transfer students who have not been reclassified from a pre-major to CRJ major status will not be eligible to enroll in most upper division CRJ courses during registration.

If you are entering CSUS as a freshman, contact the Criminal Justice Student Service Center for major advising early in your academic career.

Minimum Grades

Apparently some students are getting incorrect information on minimum grade requirements for the major, so here is a quick review.

A grade of C or better is currently required in CRJ 1, 2, 4 and 5 to move from pre-major to major. Catalog year is irrelevant if the student is not yet a major.

A grade of C- or better is required for any student on 1996 or later catalog in any upper division core or elective course.

Prerequisites

Starting Fall 2006, a great number of upper-division CRJ courses will have prerequisites to ensure a logical sequence of course work.  Refer to the recently revised major planning worksheets for specifics.

Student Handouts:

Warning: Know your catalog rights!

Your catalog year affects everything.  Beginning, stopping, restarting, and transferring schools can impact your major course requirements, and therefore your graduation requirements. (Senior year is always a bad time to find this out, by the way.)

Verify your catalog!
Before using these guides or petitioning to graduate, contact the Criminal Justice Student Advising Center to be sure you are using the right one.

Note: Starting Fall 2006, a great number of upper-division CRJ courses will have prerequisites to ensure a logical sequence of course work.  Refer to the recently revised major planning worksheets for specifics.
