Maryjane Rees Language, Speech, and Hearing Center
The Maryjane Rees Language, Speech and Hearing Center is dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of conditions that limit one’s ability to communicate freely. The Center has been an education and training facility since 1952 for students preparing for careers in speech-language pathology and audiology.
SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY
Speech and language disorders affect people of all ages. Graduate students evaluate and treat speech and language problems under close supervision by faculty who are nationally certified and state-licensed speech-language pathologists or audiologists.
Services
Assessment and treatment services are available for disorders associated with:
- Articulation (The quality, clarity or sharpness of speech)
- Fluency
- Voice
- Phonological disorders (the way sounds function in languages, including phonemes, syllable structure, stress, accent, intonation, and which sounds are distinctive units within a language.)
- Accent modification
- Phonological difficulties associated with English as a second language (ESL).
- Language and augmentative/alternative communication (AAC).
- Speech is disrupted by abnormal rhythm and rate (e.g., stuttering and cluttering)
- Speech is disrupted by abnormal vocal pitch, loudness, and/or quality.
- Speech is disrupted secondary to developmental disorders and syndromes, degenerative disorders or complex problems.
- Language disorders peripheral hearing loss or central auditory processing disorders (Therapy only. CAP testing is not currently available.).
- Language disorders secondary to a myriad of contributing factors including delayed development, neurological problems, and various genetic conditions.
- Speech and Language are disordered secondary to neurogenically related problems such as cerebrovascular accident, traumatic brain injury, or other neurological disorders.
ENROLLMENT
In order to ensure the highest quality services, all new clients to the Center are requested to complete a questionnaire and submit pertinent records prior to being scheduled. All new clients to the Center will be evaluated prior to enrollment in therapy. In some instances, a recent speech or language evaluation from another agency is an acceptable alternative to the evaluation.
The Center enrolls clients for speech/language therapy according to the University calendar for the fall and spring semesters. Clients are selected on a first come, first served basis; however, the training needs of the student clinicians are also a consideration.
