Therapeutic Recreation Services are provided in a variety of residential, clinical and community settings:
Therapeutic Recreation • Services are provided by trained professionals, certified at both the State and National levels. • Educational programs are offered through accredited universities such as the California State University, Sacramento - (see RLS Therapeutic Recreation). THERAPEUTIC RECREATION • Offers clients the opportunity to live life at their highest level of functioning. • Provides the opportunity for all individuals to participate in leisure pursuits. Therapeutic Recreation Facts: • Therapeutic Recreation is one of the fastest growing professions in the nation. • A career in Therapeutic Recreation offers many intrinsic rewards: Variety, Creativity, Satisfaction, and Opportunity for Growth. • Therapeutic Recreation is an important contributor to the independence of individuals with disabilities and successful community reintegration. • Individual needs, interests, and abilities play a major role in Therapeutic Recreation Programming. • Therapeutic Recreation professionals advocate leisure involvement through play and recreational activities. • The California Board of Recreation and Park Certification and/or the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification offer certification at both the professional and the paraprofessional levels. • There are over 700 certified Therapeutic Recreation professionals in the State of California. • Therapeutic Recreation professionals are an important member of a team of health-care professionals, whether in clinical or community settings. • University educational programs in Therapeutic Recreation (B.S. and M.S.) are found at many of the California State Universities, especially at the California State University, Sacramento. • Therapeutic Recreation workshops, lectures, and conferences are annually held throughout the State. • One of the leading professional organizations for Recreation Professionals is the California Park and Recreation Society. • The California Park and Recreation Society has a specific section for Therapeutic Recreation Professionals: The Therapeutic Recreation Section. • Therapeutic Recreation Section activities include: legislative action, developing professional standards, initiating and disseminating research, and professional development. • Salaries for Therapeutic Recreation Professionals are very competitive and vary upon region.
