Therapeutic
Recreation Students
Important Internship Information
- When do I do my
195D or 295D TR Internship?
Your very
last semester in school, after all of your RLS courses have been taken
and passed (no incompletes allowed). You legally must have the coursework
finished for client protection and for your own benefit in regards to
being available for jobs and certification applications.
- Where do I intern?
TR students
must intern in CBRPC state approved agencies, if in California. Out
of state options are available.
- How many hours?
Current certification
requirements ask 400 hours minimum (10 units). A 600-hour (15 units)
internship is recommended. Currently, you must work for a minimum of
10 consecutive weeks and have 400 hours total internship hours for credit,
in an approved site, supervised by a certified recreation therapist
on site and have a certified faculty advisor during the internship.
In 2002 it will be 480 hours, 12 consecutive weeks minimum. Prerequisite
hours - You must have 600 hours of related professional experiences
paid or non-paid completed prior to the internship. You are responsible
for documenting this with your faculty advisor.
- Your authorization
form, learning objectives, proof of agency supervisor certifications
and a current copy of transcript are due for signature and review a
minimum of 3 weeks before final semester before you intern. The TR advisor
must review for appropriateness and sign as well as DFE coordinator.
Spring internship paperwork is due December 1. Summer or fall internship
paperwork is due May 1.
- The semester prior
to interning you are required to attend the final TR Intern Seminar
held from 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. the last Friday of finals.
The TR Internship
process is influenced by 2 certifying bodies, NCTRC and CBRPC - both
with different requirements. In order to fully understand what you
must do to comply - a series of TR meetings/resources are designated
for the purpose of informing you on how to successfully intern. They
are:
(1) The TR Intern
Preparation Meeting - held early every semester in order to help you
select the proper intern setting.
(2) The Final TR
Intern Seminar - held the last Friday of finals 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
This meeting serves as a closure for those interns in the field and
an orientation for those about to intern. It is a required meeting.
These meetings
are posted in a TR Meetings and Activities Schedule published each
semester.
(3) A booklet called
TRIGS - Therapeutic Recreation Internship Guidelines has been developed
by Dr. Stensrud and serves as your main guide to selection of agency,
assignments, certification and job placement. It is available at the
Hornet Bookstore. You are requested to bring TRIGS to the TR Internship
meetings and into your actual internship. |
