A minimum of 21 units must be 200-level courses. No more than 6 units of RLS 295 and RLS 299 in combination may be applied toward the 30 unit requirement. RLS graduate students taking undergraduate courses in the department will be required to complete supplemental assignments designed by the course instructor. A student from another discipline who wishes to qualify for state and/or national certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist may need to take additional coursework and TR internship. The following courses reflect a tentative program to be developed by both the graduate student and faculty advisor. Program revisions require advisor approval prior to the taking of any course implied by such a revision. Conditional Courses: Courses required as conditional courses if undergraduate degree is other than Therapeutic Recreation. Most conditional courses may be taken simultaneously with graduate courses. Six units from conditional courses may be counted toward units required for MS degree.
Required Courses: (12 units) All courses are required. All are evening classes. Each is not offered every semester. Consult class schedule and catalog.
Electives: (15 units) Individually designed to meet TR certification requirements. Select 6 units from the following:
Select 9 units: RLS courses from the 100-level (that are approved in advance by the Graduate Coordinator) may be used in this area, if the overall requirement for 21 units of 200-level work has been met. 200-level courses (that are approved in advance by the Graduate Coordinator) within or outside the department may also be used.
Culminating Requirement: 3 units – Not counted as a 200 level course.
* These courses are specific TR content courses highly recommended related to certification. Related/Supportive Coursework: 18 units (Required for State and National certification.) The requirements are: 3 units Abnormal Psychology; 3 units Anatomy and Physiology; and 3 units Lifespan Human Growth and Development. The remaining semester hours of coursework must be fulfilled in the content area of ‘human services’ as defined by NCTRC. TR Graduate students may have fulfilled part or all of the 18 units of
related/supportive coursework in their undergraduate degree.
