Therapeutic Recreation Related/Supportive Coursework
Options for Fulfilling the Anatomy And Physiology Requirement

Introduction:

The Therapeutic Recreation Option at CSUS intends to prepare students for state (CPRPC) and national (NCTRC) professional certification as a recreation therapist. One of the requirements of NCTRC is a minimum of 3 units of Anatomy and Physiology

(A & P). Students can complete this certification requirement as part of their degree at CSUS or take the course 'on the side' of their degree. The three major ways to complete the requirement are:

(1) at CSUS
(2) at Community College - transferable to CSUS and degree
(3) at Community College - not transferable to CSU degree - for NCTRC requirement only

1. Anatomy and Physiology at CSU

BIO 25 Human Anatomy and Physiology I
Units: 4
No Prerequisites Lecture and Lab
BIO 26 Human Anatomy and Physiology II
Units: 4
Prerequisites: BIO 25

BIO 22 Introductory Human Anatomy
Units: 4
Prerequisites: BIO 10 Basic Biological Concepts OR
BIO 20 Biology: A Human Perspective
BIO 31 Introductory Human Physiology
Units: 4
Prerequisites: BIO 10 Basic Biological Concepts OR

BIO 20 Biology: A Human Perspective AND
CHEM 6A Introduction to General Chemistry OR
CHEM 1A General Chemistry
You could have taken A & P at another CSU or University. Check with TR advisory for approval.

2. Community College - Transferable to CSU degree

American River College (ARC), Consumnes River College (CRC), and Sacramento City College (SCC):
BIO 25 Anatomy and Physiology
Units: 5
Prerequisites: CHEM 2A Introduction to Chemistry OR
CHEM 1A General Chemistry
With a grade of "C" or better

BIO 26 Anatomy and Physiology
Units: 5
Prerequisites: BIO 25 Anatomy and Physiology
With a grade of "C" or better
Both Biology 25 and 26 must be taken to study all the major body systems.
Both are transferable to CSUS and can be counted as part of your 18 units of related/supportive courses. NCTRC requires only 3 units of A & P.

Sierra College:

BIO 55 General Human Anatomy and Physiology
Units: 4
Prerequisites: None listed
BIO 56 Biology: A Human Perspective
Units: 3
Prerequisites: Bio Sci 56L must be taken concurrently

Both are transferable to CSUS.
Other community colleges offer CSU transferable A & P courses, usually with labs.

3. Non-transferable Anatomy and Physiology Courses

There are also non-transferable anatomy and physiology classes at community colleges. Non-transferable means they can not be used for any part of your CSU degree. You can choose to fulfill the NCTRC certification requirement of 3 units of A & P via these courses. If you choose to do this, a substitution class in the 18 units of related/supportive courses for TR option majors will be added in consultation with the TR advisor.

Sacramento City College and American River College:

BIO 60 Introduction to Concepts of Human Anatomy and Physiology
Units: 3
No prerequisites
No lab
Not transferable to CSUS degree.
American River College has an optional 1 unit lab

American River College and Consumnes River College:

BIO 50 Basic Anatomy and Physiology
Units: 3
No prerequisites
CRC: Lab included (total 4 units)
ARC: Optional 1 unit lab offered
Not transferable to CSUS degree.

BIO 51 Basic Anatomy and Physiology
Units: 3
No prerequisites
CRC: Lab included (total 4 units)
ARC: Optional 1 unit lab offered
Not transferable to CSUS degree.

Both Biology 50 and 51 are necessary for a complete study of human anatomy and physiology, however - certification requirements are 3 units of A & P. You could choose to take only one 3 unit course to meet minimum NCTRC requirements.

UNDERGRAD STUDENTS: Remember if you take a non-transferable course you have to take another 3 unit related/supportive course to fulfill TR major requirements and degree requirements at CSUS.
