About me
As a native of Sacramento, I am truly excited to have come “full circle” – back to my home town and the community I know so well. I attended high school in Elk Grove and began my college career, part-time, at Cosumnes River College. In 1993, I completed my Associates of Arts Degree at American River Junior College and moved to Chico. I graduated from California State Unversity, Chico with my Bachelor of Science in 1996 and my Masters of Arts in 1998, both degrees in Recreation Administration. My teaching career began at Chico State where I worked as a Teaching Assistant and part-time lecturer. I had the opportunity to lecture at Sac State in the fall of 2002, teaching RLS 122. In 2003, I moved to Salt Lake City to pursue my doctorate in recreation at the University of Utah and successfully completed my defense in January 2007.
My academic career has spanned approximately twenty years. I began my career as a single mother, in remedial English courses, and over the years had to balance classes and homework with work obligations and the needs of my children. I am the first person in my family to graduate from a four year university, let alone receive a PhD. I know many of our Sac State students share some of these similar challenges of balancing the demands of life, work, and family with educational pursuits. Throughout my academic career, I have had a number of inspirational mentors whose encouragement and support motivated me to pursue my dreams. Like those who encouraged me with their stories of success, I hope my experiences will provide inspiration for my students to reach for their greatest potential.
Teaching Philosophy: the core mission of the recreation and park profession is to make available opportunities for rewarding leisure and recreation experiences to occur. My teaching philosophy parallels this mission statement in an academic framework, “to make available opportunities for learning experiences to occur.” For each class, I seek to provide learning opportunities that will allow students to: 1) gain competencies, 2) critically think and problem solve, 3) communicate (in both written and verbal formats), and 4) apply knowledge gained inside and outside the classroom.
Research Interests
-
Creating safe opportunities in community park settings: women's experience with fear of violence and behavioral coping strategies; the influence of environmental cues (levels concealment for potential offenders) and social cues (presence of others recreating in a park setting) on fear of crime; and environmental design strategies used to detract crime, such as Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, Safer Cities, and Defensible Space
