New CHHS Chair Appointments

Beth Kivel takes over Recreation & Leisure Studies chair

New to HHS in 2003, Beth Kivel came to Sac State from an appointment at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A long time community activist, the expectation for faculty members to be involved in governance at all levels of the university was a key point in her decision to join Sac State faculty. Regarding her position as Chair, Kivel says: "I see my role as a faciltiator who will support faculty in their individual growth and development and in their collective work in supporting the vision of the department. We want to grow the major at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and we want to ensure that our graduates are ready and prepared to take on leadership in the profession of parks, recreation, tourism, therapeutic recreation and community recreation. We also want students, both majors and non-majors who take our courses, to advocate for recreation and leisure in their respective communities. Specifically we want them to lobby for more open space, advocate for a new arts complex or support bonds or referenda to create more parks and recreation programs. And, we want our majors to graduate with the skills they need to plan, implement and evaluate programs and to take on leadership roles in the profession."
